Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK)

PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) in Hickory, NC

At Graystone Eye, we understand that LASIK isn’t the right choice for everyone. For some patients, PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) provides the same excellent results as LASIK — but with a slightly different approach.

PRK uses the same advanced excimer laser technology as iLASIK to reshape the cornea and correct vision. The difference is that PRK treats the outer surface of the cornea, rather than creating a corneal flap. This makes it a safe and effective option for patients with thinner corneas, irregular corneal surfaces, or a history of refractive surgery.

How Does PRK Work?

  1. The thin, outer epithelial layer of the cornea is gently removed.
  2. The excimer laser reshapes the cornea with precise, customized pulses of light.
  3. A protective contact lens is placed while the epithelium naturally regenerates over a few days.

The laser correction itself is identical to LASIK — only the surface preparation is different.

Who Is a Candidate for PRK?

PRK may be recommended if you:

  • Have thin corneas that make LASIK unsuitable
  • Have had prior refractive surgery
  • Work in professions or activities where corneal flap healing could pose risks (e.g., military, contact sports)
  • Want the same long-term vision results as LASIK without flap-related concerns

Our board-certified ophthalmologists at Graystone Eye in Hickory, NC will carefully evaluate your eyes and determine whether PRK, LASIK, or another procedure best suits your needs.
