20 YEARS OF CLEARER VISION: FROM LASIK TO RLE

October 19th, 2026

Twenty years can change a lot.

Our careers evolve. Families grow. Lifestyles change—and our eyes change with us. For one Graystone iLASIK patient, those 20 years tell a remarkable vision story that began with LASIK and recently came full circle with Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE).

HER STORY BEGAN WITH LASIK

Twenty years ago, she was a busy young mother with a toddler and heavily dependent on corrective lenses.

Like many contact lens wearers, life sometimes got in the way of proper lens care. She remembers sleeping in her contacts and not replacing them as frequently as recommended. Her vision without correction was extremely limited, and she describes herself at the time as “legally blind” without her contacts or glasses. Then she learned she was a candidate for LASIK. Under the care of Dr. Trey Oursler and the Graystone team, LASIK provided an opportunity to correct her vision by reshaping the cornea and significantly reduce her dependence on corrective lenses.

For her, it changed everyday life. But LASIK doesn't stop the natural aging process of the eye—and approximately 20 years later, her vision needs had changed again.

20 YEARS LATER: A DIFFERENT EYE. A DIFFERENT SOLUTION.

As we age, the natural lens inside the eye gradually becomes less flexible. This can make focusing at near distances increasingly difficult, a normal age-related change known as presbyopia.

For this patient, trifocals had become necessary. But having benefited from refractive surgery years earlier, she wanted to know what modern vision correction could offer at this stage of her life. She returned to the team she already knew.

This time, the answer wasn't another LASIK procedure.

It was Refractive Lens Exchange.

WHAT IS RLE?

Refractive Lens Exchange is a lens-based vision correction procedure. Rather than reshaping the cornea as LASIK does, RLE removes the eye's natural lens and replaces it with an artificial intraocular lens selected according to the patient's visual needs and ocular measurements.

The procedure shares important similarities with cataract surgery—the natural lens is removed and replaced with an intraocular lens—but RLE is performed for refractive purposes rather than because a cataract requires removal. For appropriately selected patients experiencing age-related changes in their vision, RLE can provide an alternative to continued dependence on glasses or contacts.

That distinction is exactly why comprehensive refractive care matters.

The right procedure at 25, 35 or 45 may not be the right procedure later in life.

ONE PATIENT. TWO VERY DIFFERENT PROCEDURES.

Her experience illustrates something we emphasize at Graystone iLASIK:

We don't start with a procedure. We start with your eyes.

LASIK was appropriate for her eyes and lifestyle 20 years ago. As her eyes aged and her visual needs changed, RLE offered a different approach. Her experience with Graystone spanned two decades, but her description of the care remained remarkably consistent:

“Dr. Oursler and the entire Graystone staff were very thorough, courteous, professional, and helpful in many ways. Both surgeries were very successful and I couldn’t be happier!!”

MODERN VISION CORRECTION IS MORE THAN LASIK

Today, refractive surgery isn't one-size-fits-all.

Graystone iLASIK offers multiple approaches to vision correction, including iLASIK, PRK, EVO ICL and RLE. Which procedure is appropriate depends on factors such as age, prescription, corneal measurements, natural lens changes, eye health and individual vision goals. That's why every journey begins with a comprehensive refractive evaluation. For this patient, that journey happened twice—20 years apart.

Two different stages of life. Two different vision solutions. One team she trusted with both.

WHAT COULD YOUR NEXT 20 YEARS LOOK LIKE?

If glasses, contacts, readers, bifocals or trifocals are part of your everyday routine, you may have more options than you realize.

Schedule a FREE refractive consultation with Dr. Trey Oursler and the Graystone iLASIK team to learn which options may be appropriate for your eyes.

Individual results vary. Not everyone is a candidate for refractive surgery. A comprehensive eye examination is necessary to determine candidacy and appropriate treatment.
